This
is a survey to find out which is the more commonly used way to roll D3
Please take 30 seconds to take a look
Every
time one of the players in our RPGroup needs to roll a D3 we grab for a D6 then
proclaim either 123-456 OR 12 - 34 -56. This then sparks off 5 minutes of arguments
about the benefits and floors in each system. The table below shows what the
rolled number on the dice represents in the two different systems. See below
for a brief list of the benefits for each system and a greater explanation of
what the hell I'm talking about.
Note: I have not included actually having a D3 dice (six sided
dice with two sets of 1,2,3) which is by far the best solution as it does not
require any calculations to get the result.

Another common way to roll D3 is to roll
D4 and ignore any 4's rolled.

The 123-456 system:
This system's main advantage is that a roll of 123 is the actual number generated and 4, 5, 6 become 1, 2, 3 again. This means there is less calculations to be done.
The 12-34-56 system
I like this system because a roll of 5 and 6 both give a result of 3 so the higher you roll the better still. It does mean that only a roll of 1 gives the actual number generated (but lets face it, that math's is not exactly hard!)
The D4 ignore 4's system
This system requires no number converting but its surprising how many 4's you can roll in a row when you don't want one, a bit of a time waster really.
